The Reclamation Process

Image

Our bricks have already lived a long life before they reach us. Sourced from old factories and historic buildings, they are carefully recovered and preserved with great respect for their history.

Through meticulous handwork, we free each brick from mortar and plaster residues — a time-intensive process that ensures quality and authenticity. The result is a unique building material that reflects responsible resource use and offers a CO₂ saving of over 98 % compared to newly manufactured clinker bricks.

After processing, the bricks are palletized and temporarily stored. Depending on the application, they are further processed into clinker slips or paving elements. Even leftover fragments are given new purpose: crushed clinker is transformed into high-quality growing substrate for green roofs, where it supports sustainable urban greening.

These one-of-a-kind materials find a new home in modern buildings — where their rich history and distinctive character continue to inspire future generations.

Why It’s Important to Act Now!

Rethinking and Acting for the Decades Ahead

Image

The climate goals set out in the 2015 Paris Agreement are dangerously optimistic. The central aim of limiting global warming to 2°C above pre-industrial levels is becoming increasingly unattainable.

The consequences of rising global temperatures will affect every aspect of human life — from cities and infrastructure to nature and daily living. This reality demands a fundamental shift in the way we think and act in the decades to come.

At Klinker Historika, we see sustainability not as an option, but as an urgent responsibility. By reusing historic building materials, we are already contributing to a massive reduction in CO₂ emissions — proving that meaningful climate action starts with the choices we make today.

EPD

Denken und Handeln in den nächsten Jahrzehnten neu ausrichten!

In 2025, based on 2024 data, Klinker Historika commissioned the Institut für Bauen und Umwelt e.V. (IBU) to create our official Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). This EPD covers our reclaimed bricks (Re-Use bricks) and provides a transparent, third-party-verified assessment of their environmental impact.

The declaration is based on a comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) that calculates the environmental footprint of our bricks from "cradle to gate" — meaning from recovery at demolition sites ("harvesting") through processing, packaging, and delivery to our customers.

This represents a partial life cycle analysis, focusing specifically on the production phase and excluding use and end-of-life stages.

Outstanding Environmental Performance

The results confirm what we’ve always known:

Reusing historic bricks is one of the most climate-friendly choices in construction.

Our Re-Use bricks have an exceptionally low carbon footprint:

9.330 kg CO₂ per tonne of reclaimed bricks

16.822 kg CO₂ per cubic metre of reclaimed bricks

Compared to the average emissions of newly manufactured clinker bricks, this represents a CO₂ reduction of over 98 %.

By choosing Klinker Historika’s reclaimed bricks, architects, builders, and developers make a significant contribution to climate protection and resource conservation.

A Step Toward Sustainable Building

This decision isn’t just about aesthetics or heritage — it’s a powerful step in combating climate change and reducing the environmental burden of construction.

Today, we already hold an EPD in verification, which we are pleased to provide as an excerpt in the attached document.
