EPD – Environmental Product Declaration

In 2025, based on 2024 data, Klinker Historika commissioned the Institut für Bauen und Umwelt e.V. (IBU) to create our official Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). This EPD covers our reclaimed bricks (Re-Use bricks) and provides a transparent, third-party-verified assessment of their environmental impact.

The declaration is based on a comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) that calculates the environmental footprint of our bricks from "cradle to gate" — meaning from recovery at demolition sites ("harvesting") through processing, packaging, and delivery to our customers.

This represents a partial life cycle analysis, focusing specifically on the production phase and excluding use and end-of-life stages.

Outstanding Environmental Performance

The results confirm what we’ve always known:

Reusing historic bricks is one of the most climate-friendly choices in construction.

Our Re-Use bricks have an exceptionally low carbon footprint:

9.330 kg CO₂ per tonne of reclaimed bricks

16.822 kg CO₂ per cubic metre of reclaimed bricks

Compared to the average emissions of newly manufactured clinker bricks, this represents a CO₂ reduction of over 98 %.

By choosing Klinker Historika’s reclaimed bricks, architects, builders, and developers make a significant contribution to climate protection and resource conservation.

A Step Toward Sustainable Building

This decision isn’t just about aesthetics or heritage — it’s a powerful step in combating climate change and reducing the environmental burden of construction.

Today, we already hold an EPD in verification, which we are pleased to provide as an excerpt in the attached document.

Transparency. Accountability. Sustainability.

Built into every brick.
